Students from Monash’s School of Science joined 30 eager pupils and 3 teachers from Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Utama Damansara 2 today at Sungai Penchala river banks. The programme is a collaboration initiative led by Salcon Berhad and co-organized by Water Watch Penang and Malaysia Water Partnership to give students hands-on experience in learning about Malaysia’s rivers and water.

Associate Professor Catherine Yule, Deputy Head of School of Science in Monash said, “We are impressed with the Salcon river and water awareness programme which focusses very much on hands-on learning and experiences to impart the knowledge on the care of our river in young children. This augurs well for the environment and the country’s future generations”.

Ms Chern Meng Gaik, Salcon Corporate Manager said, “The ripple effect of the Salcon river programme will spread far and wide as students bring back the knowledge they have gained to their friends, families and teachers.”

As finale to the 2012 river program, Salcon has invited 15 primary schools from all over Selangor to participate in the inaugural Salcon Inter-state River and water quiz competition on 3rd November 2012 at Monash University. This event will bring students together to test their knowledge of Malaysian rivers.

Improving water quality of our rivers is certainly very important task that needs to be addressed properly on all levels -from local, regional, national as well as international with total support from corporate entities, government agencies and also non-government organization. Healthy rivers mean healthy environment, and healthy environment means healthy life.
