Salcon River Programme moulds future environmentally conscious leaders

Forty five (45) primary school-goers from Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Sunway and Sekolah Kebangsaan TUDM Subang were given the opportunity to be environmentally conscious leaders of the future via the Salcon River and Water Awareness Educational Programme at Lembah Kiara Taman Tun Dr. Ismail today.

The Salcon River & Water Awareness Educational Programme is designed to instill awareness amongst our younger generation on the importance of our precious water resources. With the rising and critical needs of raw water resources nowadays, the students obtained an up-close and personal look on the importance of preserving and conserving the environment.

The regional award-winning programme is organized in collaboration with non government organization Water Watch Penang (WWP). Under the guidance of facilitators, the students learned how to conduct river water physical, biological and chemical tests as well as to define the health of the river. This involves water pH testing, water flow monitoring, water turbidity, dissolved oxygen testing and identifying aquatic organism using water monitoring kits.

“We realize that students can understand faster when they are given opportunity to conduct every test by themselves in this programme. We believe this will further open their hearts and minds to the precious natural treasures besides just learning the theory from the textbooks”, said Mr. Mohd Huzaini Husin, teacher of SK Bandar Sunway.

According to one of the students from SK Bandar Sunway, Lokman Hakim Bin Noor Azman, he is very grateful to be able to participate in the exciting activities prepared and gained valuable knowledge about importance of river and also the creatures that live in it. He added that, “I want to share this experience with my friends and family and will continue to love the nature forever and educate my future generation too!”

This was the fifth year in which Salcon has held the Salcon River & Water Awareness Educational Programme for primary schools in Klang Valley. To date, this programme has benefited 24 schools and 4 orphanage homes, involving 514 children.

Salcon’s Senior Manager, Chern Meng Gaik said: “We firmly believe that education via the ‘learning by doing’ approach provides powerful hands-on learning experiences that connect the students to their communities and environment. This will inspire and train these future generations to be responsible & environmentally conscious leaders tomorrow.”

“In line with our objective to reach out to more schools and students, we are thrilled to extend our invitation to the public who are interested to volunteer in facilitating our younger generations in learning the importance of river and water and at the same time provide them opportunity to give back to the society and nature”, said Ms Chern.
